General Introduction

Zhenguo Temple is a 1000-year-old Buddhist Temple located to the north of Pingyao12 km away. It shares the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation together with the Ancient City of Pingyao and Shuanglin Temple. This impressive temple complex is divided into two sections, built around front and back courtyards. At the center of the front courtyard is the most noteworthy building in the temple, the Hall of Ten Thousand Buddha, one of the oldest wooden buildings in China. Inside the hall are 11 statues. The plump-looking sculptures, all with distinctive facial expressions, date from the Five Dynasty Period and are considered to be important works of art. The intricate roof design is also considered a marvellous feature of this historical building, with the tall bracket sets considered a rarity in an ancient temple. In the back courtyard is the Hall of Three Buddha, with the Avalokiteśvara Hall and the Hall of Kṣitigarbha on either side. They contain wonderful sculptures and frescoes.
