DAY 1 :

  • This morning, you will take the bullet train from Beijing to Datong and will arrive in Datong at around 10:00. Our guide will wait for you outside the train station and start our journey there. Firstly, we will transfer to the Yungang Grottoes(20km/40mins), you will explore this impressive UNESCO site for 2.5 hours, and will appreciate 59,000 amazing stone statues which were created in the Northern Wei Dynasty(386—534).
  • After lunch, you will be guided to the Huayan Monastery, an active Buddhist Temple which was built during the Liao Dynasty (907 – 1125). You will see the infrequent Liao architectures and also a Bodhisattva statue with a grin on her face, which makes it stand out from the rest.
  • Then we will head for the Nine-Dragon Wall, the biggest and oldest glazed dragon wall in China which used to be a screen in front of a prince’s mansion 600 years ago.
  • Next to visit the Shanhua Monastery, another monastery which was built in Liao Dynasty.
  • Rest time of the day, we will round off today’s Datong tour with the Ancient City Wall. It’s quite interesting to take a leisurely walk or ride a bike on the wall. Then go to the hotel to check in.

  • After breakfast, our guide will come to your hotel to pick you up at around 8:30 and transfer you to the Hanging Temple, (75km/1.5h), enjoy this 1,500 years old architecture wonder for about 1.5 hours. Then after lunch, transfer 1 hours (50km) to the Wooden Pagoda which was built in 1056 AD, in the Liao Dynasty (916-1125) and standing at 67.31 meters high. It is the oldest and tallest wooden multi-storey structure in the world.
  • After the tour, drive to Pingyao with your guide(3.5 hours). The rest of today is free for you to explore the ancient city of Pingyao.

  • In the morning, your guide will pick you up to start Pingyao Ancient City exploration. Pingyao Ancient City is listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Your tour starts from the Ancient City Wall of Pingyao, where you can have a panorama view of the layout of this town. Then you will move on to the Rishengchang Former Bank, which shows you the original bank system in the past. Next, stroll on the traditional Ming and Qing Street, a cobbled road with old buildings on either side. It’s much like tracing back to the former bustle bazaar in the old days. Later, visit the Temple of City God and the Confucian Temple.
  • After Pingyao Ancient City exploration, drive about 15 minutes to visit Shuanglin Temple, where you will be impressed by its large number of clay figures with different face expressions and the body postures.
  • Return to your hotel after Shuanglin Temple visit.

  • After breakfast, drive about 1 hour to Zhangbi Ancient Castle, which is a underground tunnels complex dug to hide out in times of war in over 1380 years ago. You will visit the village when you come out of the tunnel. Later, move to Wang’s Family Compound which is reputed as an art museum of traditional Chinese architecture and “Forbidden City in Folk”. It is a mansion of rich Wang family which was built through the Ming and Qing dynasties.
  • After visiting, your local guide will escort you to Railway Station to catch your train to Beijing.

The Wooden Pagoda, the oldest, highest and biggest wooden pagoda in the world, is about 1.5 hours drive from Datong.

The Datong Volcano Groups are one of the important specific landform types in East Asia. You can also make a hiking trip there.

Datong is adjacent to Inner Mongolia in the north. The Great Wall, played an important role in ancient time, was built just clay without the bricks protection, after thousands years erosion, looks not as magnificent as the wall in Beijing. But it’s the real China wall. The local villagers call it “Bian Qiang” means “the Frontier Wall”.  

Shuanglin Temple and Zhenguo Temple are two well-known temples outside of Pingyao were officially inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Pingyao in 1997. 

When Is the Best Time to Visit  DATONG?

Datong: Datong  is a region with a mild climate that travelers can visit all year round. Rarely very cold in winter, summers are constantly cool, and the thermometer rarely goes above 30 degrees. From March to early November is the time with the most comfortble weather and no much rain. If you want to feel the cold of Datong , winter is also a good chioce because you can enjoy the traditional Chinese New Year and appriciate beautiful snow scenery.

When Is the Best Time to Visit  Pingyao?

March to October is the best time to visit Pingyao. Climate in Pingyao is typically temperate continental monsoon climate with hot summer and cold winter. March to October the temperature is suitable for travelling. Annual average temperature is about 10 °C. Also after October since less domestic tourists visit, Pingyao is getting less crowded, you can indulge in every corner of the city. February is also recommended for the traditional Chinese New Year celebration hold in the city, you will not feel regret with that kind of atmosphere in winter.
