General Introduction

The main hall of Foguang Temple dates from 857,one of the oldest wooden structure buildings in the whole world. Therefore, it is recognized by architects as “the example of wooden buildings in Tang Dynasty”. Foguang Temple is long in East and West and narrow in North and south. Therefore, the layout of the temple is based on the east-west axis as the channel, which mainly concentrates many main buildings in three courtyard with high and low layers and symmetrical left and right, so that the whole temple is organized and well arranged. The East Hall with the roof of the building overhangs almost half sides of the wall has a total area of 677 square meters. The hall is gentle, magnificent, delicate and firm, which is the best preserved wooden structure building in Tang Dynasty.
